French Camp Reinforcement Project

Improving reliability in San Joaquin County

You deserve reliable power. To help, we're upgrading the electric system in French Camp. This upgrade will bring better, more dependable service to about 20,000 customers in your area.

How this work will benefit you

These upgrades are designed to deliver dependable service you can count on.

  • More reliable power for about 20,000 customers
  • Support for current and future energy needs to cut down on potential outages now and as your community grows
  • New, stronger equipment that lasts longer and works better

Project details

We plan to build a new electric substation in French Camp. We will connect it to a nearby high-voltage powerline (an existing 230 kV transmission line). This will strengthen the power grid. It will improve your electric service by reducing the likelihood of outages for homes and businesses in your community.

Frequently asked questions

The electric system in this area needs an update. The current equipment is aging and can't keep up with local energy needs.

We want to cut down the potential of outages for you. The new substation will bring stronger equipment closer to homes and businesses. That means fewer outages and better service for your neighborhood.

The proposed project area is in San Joaquin County. It is in the French Camp community. We plan to build a new substation. We will connect it to the Bellota-Tesla 230 kV transmission line. That transmission line is about two miles west of the French Camp substation. It runs east of the San Joaquin River, crossing French Camp Road and Howard Road.

We're looking at the area now to find the best site. Several factors will determine the final site. These include study of the land and design, checks on the environment, approvals from the government and your feedback. What you share will help shape choices like where to place the substation and powerlines.

We plan to submit a permit application to the CPUC in 2027. We will submit the application after completing technical studies and public outreach. The CPUC will review the application. They will then prepare an environmental document. That process usually takes about two to three years. It includes chances for public input.

If approved by the CPUC, construction could start in 2031 and finish in 2033. We will update the timeline as the project moves forward. We will keep you and your neighbors informed.

We want to hear from you. We're working with people who live here, local businesses and groups in the area. As part of planning, we will:

  • Reach out to the community and listen to your input
  • Work with public offices
  • Study the land and environment
  • Share news and updates

What you tell us will help shape the project. This includes where the substation and lines may go. We will reach out to the community frequently to connect on the project. We hope you and your neighbors will join us.
