Stabilizing prices

Our focus is on stabilizing energy prices

PG&E will deliver a safe, reliable, sustainable and climate- resilient energy system at the lowest possible cost. We will do this by:

  • Reducing our operating costs by working more efficiently and reducing unnecessary expenses, without sacrificing safety
  • Permanently solving fire risk and reducing tree trimming costs by undergrounding powerlines in high fire-risk areas
  • Spreading costs over longer periods of time to reduce bill spikes
  • Amending state policies to remove subsidies and extra costs on your bill
  • Seeking other funding to pay for safety and reliability work, such as federal grants
  • Offering programs and discounts to help you save energy and money

Understanding your bill1

Spending breakdown for every dollar we billed by PG&E: 31 cents - State mandates, including: wildfire prevention, renewable portfolio standard, public-purpose programs, , other state policy; 32 cents - Energy generation and purchasing costs; 22 cents - Operations, maintenance and upgrades; 10 cents - Regulator-authorized earnings; 5 cents - Taxes. Also note: Non-solar customers pay 15% more for electricity and grid costs that solar customers avoid due to state policy.

1 Represents a January 2024 typical residential customer bill with no assistance program discount.
2 PG&E currently earns less than its authorized return on equity.
3 Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings and Public Safety Power Shutoffs (wildfire prevention measures)

What makes up the price of electricity? The graphic above breaks it down. Note that PG&E is committed to investing in its electrical system. As a result, the risk of wildfire from PG&E's equipment has dropped significantly since 2018. Plus, the system is more resilient to harsh winter storms. Also, residential customers without solar pay 15% more. This subsidizes energy prices for solar customers.
