Interconnection and renewables

Learn more about the program

New Inverter Standards: Pursuant to California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) Resolutions E-5000 (PDF) and E-5036 (PDF). PG&E will require interconnection applicants to use UL1741 SB Certified inverters and Common Smart Inverter Profile Conformance (CSIP) starting on August 29, 2023.

We strongly recommend that installers and contractors use equipment on the California Energy Commission (CEC) list of accepted equipment. Doing so can save you time during the engineering review process. Only CEC and PG&E approved equipment appears in the drop-down list on our online Interconnection Application. Unlisted equipment requires additional documentation (PDF).

Note: Net Energy Metering (NEM) applications submitted before April 15, 2023, must be completed before April 15, 2026 to be eligible for NEM2. Starting on April 15, 2026, NEM2 interconnection applications will transition to Solar Billing Plan. Solar Billing Plan is also known as Net Billing Tariff. See frequently asked questions for more information.

Find resources for your interconnection project

We offer resources to help you apply for, install and operate an interconnection project of any size.

Find information on interconnecting a home or business generating system of less than or equal to 30 kilowatts (kW). With our resources, you can explore Interconnections for Standard Net Energy Metering (SNEM) and apply using our online tool. Visit Standard Net Energy Metering (NEM) Interconnections

Find out more about interconnecting larger solar or wind systems to the grid. The information applies to:

  • Residential and commercial rate customers installing systems that are more than 30 kW
  • Generation for agricultural and demand rate programs of any size

Learn more about larger self-generation programs. Visit Larger Self-Generation Programs.

Apply for Expanded NEM projects that are over 30 kW to 1 MW. Visit Interconnection Application for Non-Export or Certain Net Energy Metered Generating Facilities.

Find out how to sell excess power directly to us or on the open market through our distribution or transmission network. Following are the types of power sales:

  • Transmission. Voltage levels generally of 60 kV or higher, governed by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) Tariff

Apply to sell power to the wholesale market through our distribution system. Visit "Your Projects".

Learn more about exporting power. Visit Export Power.

Learn how to request a Pre-Application Report

  • The Interconnection Application requires a Pre-Application Report before applying.
  • The Pre-Application Report contains certain interconnection point information you will need for your application.
  • You can request a Pre-Application Report and secure all the required information for your application through the YourProjects portal.
  • For more information about this process, download the Pre-Application Report Request guide (PDF).
  • The Interconnection Application is available on the YourProjects portal, making it convenient to complete this entire process.

Resolution E-5357 (issued 12/27/2024) directed the Joint IOUs (SCE, SDGE, and PG&E) to develop, publish, and maintain an instruction sheet detailing the steps to test and certify new products or equipment. Review the finalized sheet (PDF).

If you have any additional questions about equipment, email EGIEquipCertification@pge.com.

Find out about unit costs for system upgrades that may be needed for generator interconnection. Example projects are provided to show how these unit costs are applied. For more information, download PG&E's Unit Cost Guide (PDF).

PG&E scheduled joint utilities workshops to discuss updates to the Unit Cost Guide on:

  • Pre-Posting Workshop: Friday, March 13, 2026
  • Unit Cost Guide Posting Date: Tuesday, March 31, 2026
  • Post-Update Workshop: Friday, April 10, 2026

Find out how PG&E addresses energy storage devices charging from the grid. Since energy storage charges and discharges energy, both aspects need to be addressed for safe and reliable interconnection. For more information, download PG&E's Guide to Energy Storage Charging Issues for Rule 21 Generator Interconnection (PDF).

Standard Single Line Diagrams

PG&E has standard single line diagrams (SLDs) available to help speed you through the application process in many cases. These are provided here for your reference, but if these work for your project, they are also included and available for selection in the application portal during the application process.

The standard SLDs include the following:

  • Rule 21 SNEM - SNEM with inverter nameplate rating less than or equal to 30 kVA/kW
This SLD is included in PG&E standard NEM2 (SNEM) Application, found on page 4 of Form 79-1151B-03 (PDF)
  • Rule 21 SNEM Paired Storage (AC coupled) – AC coupled SNEM Paired Storage Systems with PV inverter nameplate rating less than or equal to 30 kVA/kW and Storage inverter less than or equal to 10 kVA/kW
This SLD is found here (PDF)
  • Rule 21 SNEM Paired Storage (DC coupled) - DC coupled SNEM Paired Storage Systems with inverter nameplate rating less than or equal to 30 kVA/kW and Storage less than or equal to 10 kVA/kW
This SLD is found here (PDF)
  • Rule 21 Non-Export – Protection Option 3 – Storage Systems with inverter nameplate rating less than or equal to 10 kVA/kW
This SLD is found here (PDF).
  • Rule 21 Non-Export – Protection Option 6 – Storage Systems with inverter nameplate rating less than or equal to 10 kVA/kW
This SLD is found here (PDF)

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) directed PG&E in Decision 20-09-035 to allow distributed energy resources (DER) customers to include a Limited Generation Profile (LGP) with their applications. The LGP option allows DERs to perform within existing Integration Capacity Analysis (ICA) hosting capacity to avoid some distribution grid upgrades. Review the Limited Generation Profile (LGP) Procedures (PDF) for more information.

NEM2 Interconnection applications

Frequently asked questions

Interconnection customers who have not submitted a final electrical clearance on or before 11:59 p.m. April 14, 2026, will move to Solar Billing Plan. This applies to Interconnection customers with or without an executed NEM2 Interconnection Agreement.

  • The application will not be canceled. It will remain active following the transition to Solar Billing Plan.
  • PG&E will notify affected customers after  April 14, 2026, deadline. Notices will include next steps required to continue toward Permission to Operate (PTO) under Solar Billing Plan.

For customers who did not submit a final electrical clearance on or before 11:59 p.m. April 14, 2026, and without an approved utility-related extension:

  • The project will be transitioned to Solar Billing Plan. The existing application will remain active.
  • Existing completed engineering reviews and the project's queue position are kept. They remain in place unless a material project change requires another review.
  • Customers must complete updated agreements and any remaining requirements. All these requirements must be complete to receive a Permission to Operate (PTO) under Solar Billing Plan.

Complete these steps:

  • Review and sign the applicable Solar Billing Plan/Net Billing Tariff interconnection agreement.
  • Submit any outstanding inspection or interconnection documents.
  • Confirm that the system configuration complies with requirements. Confirmation is needed before PTO can be issued.

Note: Projects that transition from NEM2 to Solar Billing Plan cannot return to NEM2 unless there is an approved extension.

Customers who believe their project may qualify for an extension can apply. They must submit a NEM2 Building Permit Extension Request.

To request an extension, customers or contractors should complete the NEM 2 Building Permit Extension Request form. Complete it by filling out the online form: NEM 2 Building Permit Extension Request.

PG&E will review submitted extension requests and notify customers of the outcome. Without an approved extension, the project will be transitioned to Solar Billing Plan.
