  1. Get ready
    • To begin the process, visit the Project Resources page. 
    • This guide helps you to learn more about residential and business project requirements. 
  2. Apply online
    • To submit your application, visit Your Projects.
    • You can submit your application for service anytime. Check your application 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 
  3. Speak with your PG&E representative.
    • Your PG&E representative will contact you within three business days.
    • The representative will discuss the project details with you.
  4. Design your project.
    • A PG&E or an applicant designer can design your project.
    • After the design is prepared, PG&E sends the project proposal to you for your approval. 
    • Explore design responsibilities and review applicant requirements.

 

important notice Note: After you apply for gas or electric service, we assign a representative to you. Your representative helps you through each step of the process, including:

  • Arranging a site assessment
  • Providing you with a project estimate and agreement
  • Helping you schedule construction work and inspections

  1. Arrange for trenching
    • If you're installing or upgrading underground lines
    • Your PG&E representative can provide drawings for trenches or other structures.
  2. Schedule our services
    • Work with your PG&E representative to schedule PG&E construction crews.
    • The crews will provide you with an assessment for gas and/or electric service.
  3. Prepare for trench inspection
    • Ensure that you call 811 before any trenching. 
    • If you hired your own contractor for trenching, get familiar with our Electric and Gas Service Requirements by visiting our Project Resources page.
    • Then, arrange for an inspection with your PG&E representative.
  4. Complete electrical or gas work.
    • Work with your contractor to install your electrical panel or stub out the gas houseline. 
    • Refer to our Electric and Gas Service Requirements by visiting our Project Resources page.
  5. Be on-site for the installation.
    • You or your contractor must be on-site when we install gas and pulls electric wires into the conduit.

important notice Note: For a disconnect that requires immediate attention please call 1-877-743-7782. Call if you have a hazardous situation or if electrical repairs are needed. Please be advised that before services can be reconnected, an application may be required.

  1. Complete municipal inspections.
    • Arrange for the appropriate local government agency to inspect your electric panel and/or gas houseline. 
  2. Confirm the meter installation date.
    • Find out from your PG&E representative when we will install your meter. 
  3. PG&E connects your service
    • When your inspections are complete and after we install your meter, we can turn on your electric and/or gas service.

Applicant design and installation responsibilities

 

Review the requirements below and work with your PG&E representative. They will help you through each step of the process. Download a full copy of our Applicant Design process (PDF) guide.

Applicants must provide design drawings and support documentation including:

 

  • Gas layout drawings
  • Single line drawings, Key Sketch
  • Base maps
  • Construction detail drawings
  • Street light design and rate schedules, to be approved by applicable governmental agencies
  • Joint Trench drawings
  • Engineering calculations, including:
    • Voltage drop
    • Flicker
    • Short circuit duty
    • Pulling tension
    • Pole sizing
    • Guying
  • Substructure information
  • Stub, complete service and branch service locations (pre-approved by utility)
  • Main locations
  • Meter locations (pre-approved by utility) with meter set and manifold detail
  • Identified required permits
  • Identified rights-of-way as required by the utility
  • Intents (JT Notice of Intent is provided by the trench design coordinator
  • Form B
  • Coordination with other utilities
  • Tentative design and construction scheduling descriptions
  • Conflict check descriptions
  • Material list with breakdown, at the individual sketch location and in the material summary, for example:
    • Rule 15
    • Rule 16
    • Franchise or third party
    • Private property
  • Final drawings stamped and signed by a registered Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Pole and anchor staking, trench route staking
  • Resolution of design changes during construction resulting from field conflicts
  • Field check of project site to verify the location of existing facilities
  • Additional copies of construction drawings after original distribution

Our design submission process has changed. Applicant designers must now send design packages directly to our Resource Management Center.

  • Mailing instructions for the design packages are included in the Applicant Designer global information provided by your PG&E contact.

 

important notice Note: As the applicant, you are responsible for ensuring that the designer uses the most current design standards.

Option 1: Select installation by PG&E as a competitive bid

We will provide and install gas and/or electric facilities for your project according to tariff provisions. Before construction, you must pay any applicable advances to us. You are responsible for:

  • Route clearing
  • Land rights acquisition
  • Trenching
  • Conduit
  • Substructures
  • Inspections

 

Option 2: Select construction by applicant as a qualified contractor

A qualified contractor must provide all the necessary material and installation of the gas and/or electric facilities for the project. You must select a qualified contractor to perform the work to PG&E design and construction specs.

 

Before starting construction, you must pay any applicable advances to PG&E. Advances include the estimated costs of:

  • Engineering
  • Administration
  • Tie-ins
  • Additional facilities and labor necessary to complete the extension
