High winds can cause significant damage to homes, trees, and power lines, particularly in areas prone to severe weather.
Here are some tips on how to prepare and stay safe during windstorms:
Secure loose outdoor items
Bring in or secure garden furniture, decorations and other loose items that can become projectiles in high winds.
Trim overhanging branches
Regularly trim trees and branches that could fall on your home or vehicles during a windstorm.
Check windows and doors
Install storm shutters or plywood over windows if extreme winds are in the forecast. Ensure doors are properly secured, and consider reinforcing garage doors, which are particularly vulnerable to wind damage.
Check your roof
Inspect your roof for loose shingles or tiles. Secure any weak spots to minimize the risk of them being ripped off during the storm.
Secure vehicles
If possible, park vehicles in garages or away from trees and structures that may fall.
Prepare an emergency kit
Assemble a kit with essentials such as food, water, medications and important documents in case of power outages or evacuations.
Create a communication plan
Make sure family members know how to contact each other and where to meet if separated. Keep a list of emergency contacts handy.
Stay informed
Monitor local weather reports and alerts. Sign up for emergency notifications via phone or email to stay updated on the storm’s progress and safety instructions.
