PG&E Delivers First San Jose Data Center as Part of Historic Agreement
PG&E made a promise and just six months after signing a historic Implementation Agreement with the City of San Jose, the utility is already delivering. Together with the city and Equinix, PG&E officially powered a data center in South San Jose — the first of a dozen large‑load customers being tracked under the agreement.
“We said we’d make it faster and more certain for large load customers to get the power they need when they need it. Today we’re delivering on that promise,” said Carla Peterman, president, PG&E Corporation and executive vice president, Customer and Corporate Affairs, during a press conference and ribbon‑cutting event at Equinix’s new SV12 facility on Jan. 21.
Standing alongside Peterman and Arquelle Shaw, Equinix president of the Americas, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan highlighted just how impactful this agreement is already turning out to be for San Jose.
“Innovation and economic growth can be done sustainably and responsibly,” Mahan said. “This data center will generate approximately $2.5 million a year in net revenue to our general fund, enough to hire 12 police officers or build 25 safe, dignified interim housing units for our homeless neighbors.”
Equinix, which funded all upgrades and taxes associated with the project, reinforced what PG&E has been saying for months: large energy users can help lower bills for everyone.
“As Equinix expands, we are fully committed to paying our full share of the cost of services," Shaw said. "Ensuring our growth contributes to the downturn of energy rates. We think this is something incumbent upon our industry."
To power SV12, PG&E expanded the Santa Teresa Substation and designed upgrades to be fully scalable. That means when the next customer is ready, the grid will be ready too. SV12 now has access to 40 megawatts of power.
“The ribbon‑cutting ceremony for Equinix’s new SV12 hyperscale data center is a thrilling milestone,” said Jerry Hutchison, PG&E strategic account manager. “This achievement represents years of meticulous planning and execution, culminating in an on‑time delivery for our customer. I’m incredibly proud of the dedicated and cohesive effort of the One PG&E team, whose tenacity and collaboration made this success possible.”
