The following answers are provided to help you choose and participate in the Renewable program that is best suited to your needs.
Who is eligible to participate?
If you purchase your electricity from PG&E, you’re eligible to participate in PG&E's Solar Choice and Regional Renewable Choice programs. Participation per Service Agreement is limited to the equivalent of 2MW of solar resources (or approximately 4,730,400 kWh annually). This limitation does not apply to a federal, state or local government, school or school district, county office of education, the California Community College, the California State University or the University of California. Following are the only exceptions to your eligibility:
- If you take service on Transitional Bundled Service, Schedule S, in conjunction with a net metering schedule. To find out if you’re on TBS, Schedule S, read your energy statement. Visit your online PG&E account.
- If you’re on non-metered service
Might the programs sell out?
Yes, the programs remain open for enrollment until subscriptions reach 272 megawatts (MW) for PG&E's Solar Choice and Regional Renewable Choice programs, or until January 1, 2019, whichever comes first.
May I remain in the program after enrollment has closed?
Yes, your participation in Solar Choice is not affected by the enrollment window closing to new enrollees.
Is the electricity supplied directly to my home?
By enrolling in a solar program, you’re purchasing solar energy for your home. Although we can’t deliver “green” electrons to a specific home, we purchase the same amount of solar energy that you use monthly on your behalf.
How can I purchase 100 percent solar electricity at night or when it’s cloudy?
The solar electricity you purchase through Solar Choice programs is delivered to the grid, allowing you to receive reliable electricity, day and night. It also contributes to the growth of renewable energy at your participation level (50 percent or 100 percent for PG&E Solar Choice or between the equivalent of 25 percent and 100 percent of your usage for Regional Renewable Choice).
Is PG&E mandated to procure renewable energy?
We’re quickly adding more renewable energy to our power mix as per California's Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS). Currently, we’re on our way to achieving 33 percent renewable energy by the end of 2020 and 50 percent renewable energy by the end of 2030. The Solar Choice plans are separate from and incremental to the RPS. However, there are some ways in which this program and the RPS portfolio interact.
- Solar Choice Program:
- When you first enroll in our Solar Choice Program, the power needed to satisfy your energy requirements is first supplied from solar projects within our existing renewables portfolio, but not counted toward RPS requirements. These projects are similar to the requirements in our Solar Choice program, and serve you until specific solar projects are available to meet your energy needs.
- If you leave the Solar Choice program after we procure renewable energy from new projects on your behalf, any surplus resources are counted toward RPS and provided to you. This also applies to our regular bundled customers not enrolled in Solar Choice.
- Regional Renewable Choice Program:
The renewable energy associated with any portion of a project to which customers aren’t subscribed is counted toward RPS and is provided to all customers. This also applies to our regular bundled customers who are not enrolled in the Regional Renewable Choice Program.
Is there a long-term commitment?
- PG&E's Solar Choice Program: No, you can leave PG&E's Solar Choice program at any time. However, you lose eligibility to re-enroll for one year. Customers who are defaulted to Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) service may be exempt from this requirement.
- Regional Renewable Choice Program: You’re free to design your own customer-developer agreement and terms with a Regional Renewable Choice developer.
May I stay in the programs if I move?
Yes, if you move within our service territory, you can continue participating in either program.
Will I receive materials to communicate my program participation?
Yes, we’ll provide marketing materials to help communicate your participation in the program. You’ll receive a welcome kit in the mail. You can also contact us to receive digital collateral such as social media badges to share your participation with others. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
How does this option compare to rooftop solar panels?
For many customers, rooftop solar is a good option. However, almost half of residential and commercial rooftops are unsuitable for solar because of structural, shading or ownership issues. These programs give residential and business customers an easy way to participate in solar without installing or maintaining solar panels.
Can I start purchasing solar immediately?
- PG&E's Solar Choice Program: PG&E's Solar Choice program offers solar energy to participating customers upon sign-up. Initially the purchased solar energy is sourced from existing solar resources while new projects are built specifically for the program.
- Regional Renewable Choice Program: Regional Renewable Choice projects are estimated to begin delivering energy in late 2017 or 2018. You can begin receiving program credits on your monthly energy statement at this time.
