You can’t control winter, but you can control your energy use

Winter is here. That means cooler temperatures, shorter days and significantly more time spent indoors. For most people, that results in more energy being used for things like heating, lighting, and indoor entertainment.

While you can’t control the changing seasons, you can control how you—and your home—use energy. PG&E has tips, tools, and basic home-improvement ideas to help you save energy and money all winter long, while keeping your family comfortable.

  • Set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower when you’re at home, health permitting. Each degree above 68 uses three to five percent more energy.
  • Cut shower time in half to reduce water-heating costs by as much as 33 percent.
  • Wash your clothes in cold water and save up to $30 a year in water-heating costs.
  • Clean your clothes dryer lint trap between loads and save up to $34 a year.
  • Microwave small amounts of food instead of using the oven to reduce your cooking energy use by up to 80 percent.

NOTE: Savings are estimated for typical premises in the PG&E service area and your actual savings may vary. PG&E cannot guarantee the amount of money or energy you may save by implementing the recommended actions.

  • Seal and insulate air ducts to improve your heating/air conditioning system efficiency by as much as 20 percent.
  • Install low-flow showerheads to save up to 10 percent on water-heating costs.
  • Wrap your water heater with an insulating jacket to minimize excess heat loss and save up to 10 percent on water-heating costs.
  • Seal air leaks. Insulate your attic, walls and floors over crawl spaces and accessible basement rim joists. Save up to 10 percent on your energy costs.
  • Replace older windows with high-efficiency ENERGY STAR® models to reduce your heating and cooling costs by up to 15 percent.
  • Switch to ENERGY STAR LEDs. They use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and last up to 25 times longer.

NOTE: Savings are estimated for typical premises in the PG&E service area and your actual savings may vary. PG&E cannot guarantee the amount of money or energy you may save by implementing the recommended actions.
