Improving reliability in Monterey County

You deserve reliable power. We're upgrading the electric system in the Salinas area, so you can count on your power every day.

How this work will benefit you

This work will:

  • Improve reliability for over 8,000 homes and businesses.
  • Increase capacity to meet the region's current and future electricity needs.
  • New stronger equipment built to last longer and work better.

Project details

We plan to:

  • Construct two new 115 kV substations.
  • Build 115 kV powerlines to connect the new substations to the electric grid.
  • Rebuild and strengthen about 38 miles of 60 kV to 115 kV powerlines.
  • Replace and upgrade equipment at three active substations.
  • Retire two current substations.

These upgrades will make the system stronger for you and your neighbors.

A map shows the proposed project area. It shows Salinas, Chualar and Gonzalez. The legend includes a boundary for the project study area. The project area runs from the center of Salinas and stops south of Gonzales. There are existing powerlines running along Old Stage Road to the east and US Highway 101 to the west. There is one powerline along Spence Road. The map also shows the five existing substations in the region. From North to South, these are Salinas Substation, Industrial Acres Substation, Buena Vista Substation, Spence Substation and Gonzales Substation.

The Salinas area is growing and so is the need for power. The current equipment can't keep up with that demand. This has led to power outages and unreliable service for you and your neighbors. This project will upgrade the system, so you can count on the power you need now and in the years to come.

The proposed project is in and around Salinas in Monterey County. Here's what's planned:

  • Powerline upgrades along routes connecting Salinas, Industrial Acres, Buena Vista, Spence and Gonzales.
  • New substations to replace the existing ones at Gonzales and Spence.
  • Upgrades to existing substations at Salinas, Industrial Acres and Buena Vista.
