Program overview

PG&E's Alternative Energy Program (AEP) helps select customers switch from gas to electric appliances to avoid planned upgrades to PG&E’s gas infrastructure. When a project qualifies, PG&E may offer incentives to support the customer's transition to electric equipment.

Participation in AEP is only by invitation. Program eligibility and project review determines who participates.

What the program offers

The Alternative Energy Program provides:

  • Review of your project to determine whether electrification is right for you
  • Funding to transition from gas to electric appliances
  • Coordination with PG&E throughout the entire process

AEP focuses on solutions that deliver value to both customers and gas systems.

Eligible electrification equipment

Depending on the site and project, eligible equipment may include:

  • Heat pumps (electric space heating and cooling)
  • Heat pump water heaters
  • Electric cooking equipment
  • Electric dryers
  • Required electric service or panel upgrades related to electrification

How the program works

Step 1. PG&E identifies eligible customers.

PG&E reviews whether a customer is eligible for the program. PG&E or Resource Innovations, PG&E's third-party program consultant, will contact eligible customers.

Step 2. PG&E and customer schedule a contractor site visit.

Interested customers schedule a site visit with a contractor from our Trade Ally Network. Customers may have their preferred contractor submit an estimate for the work.

Step 3. PG&E reviews the proposal.

The AEP team reviews the contractor's bid to approve the proposed scope of work and confirm what funding can apply to the project.

Step 4. Customer signs an agreement.

Upon AEP approval, customers sign a gas termination agreement with PG&E.

Step 5. Customer completes the approved work with the selected contractor.

With the agreement in place, customers proceed with the approved electrification work. The work is in accordance with program requirements. Payments are made to the contractor in installments tied to project milestones, with the final payment made after the work is complete and verified.

Frequently asked questions

Contact the AEP program team using the information provided in your outreach letter. A PG&E program representative will confirm your eligibility. They will explain the program to you and will walk you through an interest form.

Note: DO NOT purchase equipment before obtaining approval. You must get approval to guarantee your participation in the program.

AEP enrollment is limited to customers identified by PG&E. If you have not been contacted, other PG&E rebates and federal incentives may be available to you.

The customer arranges installation through one of PG&E's Trade Ally Network contractors. Customers can also select their own preferred California-licensed contractor. The customer owns the equipment installed. PG&E provides the payment to the contractor through a series of payments.
