Pipeline Balancing Inventory Update

Monday, January 10, 2005

Recent and consistent overdeliveries by suppliers have increased Imbalance Gas in Storage to above 2.0 Bcf. An Imbalance Gas in Storage inventory above 2.2 Bcf means the entire inventory reserved for pipeline balancing has been filled. When this inventory exceeds 2.2 Bcf, pipeline balancing injections are not available.

Background

Pipeline balancing services are provided by an allocated 2.2 Bcf of storage inventory, 50 MMcf/d of injection capacity, and 70 MMcf/d of withdrawal capacity. The current inventory of Imbalance Gas in Storage can be found on Pipe Ranger's Recent Storage Activity page.

Normally, as maximum safe operating limits are approached, balancing gas is injected to maintain pipeline inventory within safe limits. Without the ability to inject for balancing, the likelihood of high inventory OFOs increases.

What can shippers do to help avoid high inventory OFOs?

  • Balance supply and demand daily. Work to ensure that supplies brought in for your customers do not exceed their daily demands.
  • Keep an eye on the Pipe Ranger System Inventory Status.
