Pipeline Balancing Injection May Be Suspended

Monday, January 10, 2005

Recent and consistent over-deliveries by suppliers have increased Imbalance Gas in Storage to over 2.2 Bcf. This indicates that the entire inventory reserved for pipeline balancing has been exceeded. Pacific Gas and Electric Company's California Gas Transmission anticipates that pipeline balancing injections will be temporarily suspended early next week. Once the Imbalance Gas in Storage inventory returns to a level below 2.2 Bcf, injection for balancing will again be available.

Pipeline balancing services are provided by an allocated 2.2 Bcf of storage inventory, 50 MMcf/d of injection capacity, and 70 MMcf/d of withdrawal capacity. The current inventory of Imbalance Gas in Storage can be found on the Pipe Ranger Operations page.

Normally, as maximum safe operating limits are approached, balancing gas is injected to maintain pipeline inventory within safe limits. Without the ability to inject for balancing, chances of calling high inventory OFOs increase.

What can shippers do to help avoid high inventory OFOs?

Balance supply and demand daily. Work to ensure that supplies brought in for your customers balance with their daily demands.
