Transition to Time-of-Use
Transition to Time-of-Use
Beginning October 2020 and lasting through 2022, many PG&E residential customers will automatically transition to the Time-of-Use (Peak Pricing 4-9 p.m. Every Day) rate plan, risk-free. The transition to Time-of-Use rate plans supports California’s ongoing commitment to clean energy.
Customers will be notified 90 days in advance that their electric service will transition to the Time-of-Use (Peak Pricing 4-9 p.m. Every Day) rate plan. They can then choose to stay on their current rate plan, pick another rate plan that is best for their household, or elect to transition to Time-of-Use. Sign in to your account to compare rate plans.
Not all customers will automatically transition to a Time-of-Use rate plan. View Time-of-Use transition eligibility.

Time-of-Use: The plan for California
On Time-of-Use rate plans, when you use energy is as important as how much you use.
California leads the nation in generating clean, renewable energy from sources such as wind and solar. As part of a statewide effort to use more renewable energy resources, Time-of-Use rate plans are an easy way for Californians to continue our clean energy leadership while ensuring a more responsible and sustainable energy future for generations to come.
Time-of-Use rate plans offer:
- Lower-priced power when demand is less
- Greater use of renewable energy
- A path to a better and healthier energy future for California
Together, we can make a big difference without sacrificing comfort, simply by shifting some usage away from high-demand times—all while receiving safer, cleaner and more reliable energy.

Customer success stories
No sacrifice at all
“I just shift my laundry in the morning on the weekend and set my dishwasher for its delay feature so it runs after 9 p.m. My electric car charges every night during off-peak hours. Really no sacrifice at all!”
- Don, PG&E Time-of-Use Customer, Central Coast
I’m making light adjustments
“With the Time-of-Use rate plan, I’m making light adjustments to my schedule, like doing laundry at night after the kids go to bed, or starting the dishwasher right before I go to sleep. It’s really not hard to learn these new habits.”
- Farin, PG&E Time-of-Use Customer, Central California
A few simple changes
“Did you know that making a few simple changes to when you do some everyday tasks can directly affect your PG&E bill as well as helping to ease the stress on the power grid? We tend to do our laundry at night rather than during the day, and last year I added an insulation blanket to our water heater.”
- Sheldon, PG&E Time-of-Use Customer, Northern California
