High Tech

The high-tech industry is characterized as technology driven and a very short concept-to-market product development time span. This industry includes those businesses and institutions that encompass the use and development of information technology, telecommunications, and controlled environment facilities. Other high-tech industries include the research, development, and production of clean energy technology (e.g. solar, wind, fuel cells, etc.), precision components (e.g., nanotechnology, silicon wafer production, etc.), and audio/video production and broadcasting. Nearly all of these high-tech industries use data centers as critical components of their businesses. Typically, high-tech facilities consume a much higher energy density compared to commercial offices of similar size. For example, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report to Congress in 2006 projected that data center energy consumption would double from 2007 to 2011. While this projection is daunting, energy-efficiency opportunities exist to help stem this trend.
