On February 2, 2009, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his home, saw his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter. Today, California Gas Transmission is announcing the close of the Abnormal Peak Day (APD) window. An APD is defined as the coldest temperature that will be exceeded every 90 years, on average. The system weighted mean temperature for an APD is estimated to be 28 degrees Fahrenheit.

What does this mean to natural gas shippers in northern California? We are not going to dispute the famous Phil’s prediction about the length of the winter, but the likelihood of experiencing abnormal temperatures in California is greatly reduced. Accordingly, local curtailments or involuntary diversions driven by cold weather are far less likely, although still possible.
