Pipe Kwon Do

Thursday, April 21, 2005

Last week's debut of three improved INSIDEtracc reports brought several benefits to movers of gas on PG&E's system. Use of these new features also raised some questions about the location of files saved from INSIDEtracc reports. Today's Pipe Kwon Do offers guidance in the quest for a personalized data sanctuary.

As Pipe Kwon Do disciples are aware, INSIDEtracc reports offer data critical to the daily movement of natural gas. All such reports can be saved in html format. In addition, the newly enhanced 405 Report (Daily Gas Usage by Agent, Monthly Summary) can be directly downloaded to Excel.

The following Pipe Kwon Do steps must be practiced to ensure this saved data is kept at its most useful location, your personal data sanctuary, normally a hard drive on your own computer. The occasional misstep in technique will instead launch this saved data into the ether of foreign servers, where the data will no longer serve its duty to you.

Saving any INSIDEtracc report as an html file in your own data sanctuary requires the following few steps:

  1. Run the requested report and, when it is ready, launch the report viewer.
  2. From the top of the screen, select File, Save As, html.
  3. In the next screen, titled New html File, click on the arrow on the right had side of the Save In: drop down box, (next to My Documents).
  4. A new screen titled ICA Client File Security will pop up. Select Full Access and Always ask me once per connection and click OK at the bottom of the screen.
  5. The next screen will show locations such as Desktop, My Documents and My Computer. Although names such as My Computer appear enticing, they offer false sanctuary. Skillful Pipe Kwon Do requires selecting C$ on Client (V:) to access your own local data folders. Choose the location that most harmoniously suits your needs and click the Save button. Your data in html format has now found sanctuary on your own computer.

The new Export to Excel button allows one to save data directly in a helpful spreadsheet format. Directing such files to your sanctuary requires steps very similar to those above:

  1. Run the 405 report and, when it is ready, launch the report viewer.
  2. Click the Export to Excel button on the top left hand corner of the report. Once the download is completed, the Status Bar in the bottom left hand corner will display Export to Excel Completed!!.
  3. Select File, Save As or click the Save button on the tool bar.
  4. In the next screen (Save As), click on the arrow on the right hand side of the Save In: drop down box (next to My Documents).
  5. A new screen titled ICA Client File Security will pop up. Select Full Access and Always ask me once per connection and click OK at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Your data in Excel format has now found sanctuary on your own computer.

With practice, these Pipe Kwon Do moves quickly become second nature. For assistance finding sanctuary for your data, please contact your California Gas Transmission Account Services Representative or Gas Scheduling Representatives via the CGT Helpline.
