Manufactured Gas Plants

Former Hollister Manufactured Gas Plant

The former Hollister manufactured gas plant (MGP) operated from 1886 to about 1935 at 6th and Sally streets in Hollister, California. In 1935, Santa Cruz began providing Hollister with natural gas, and by 1943, the MGP structures were dismantled and removed from the site. In 1988, a 2,000-gallon underground gasoline storage tank (UST) was removed. The site is now the location of PG&E’s Hollister Service Center. Several phases of investigation were performed at the site to help determine the extent of remediation that was necessary for soil and groundwater.

In December 2013, environmental remediation work at the site was completed. This work is part of a voluntary program under the oversight of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). This four-month long project involved the removal of impacted soil beneath the footprint of the site.

Community Benefits

Hollister Post-Remediation

As part of the restoration process, some benefits of this project included the construction of new sidewalks including adjacent curbs and gutters as well as the installation of a pervious concrete storm water management system, which will capture and reduce storm water runoff. This is the first of its kind within PG&E and the City of Hollister.

Sustainable practices are important to PG&E. To the greatest extent possible, we try to reduce our carbon footprint on environmental remediation projects. On this project, we were able to recycle 1,444 tons of material, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6.04 metric tons, contribute over one million dollars to the local economy and provide jobs to two local community members.
