Isolating your EV charging usage from your home or business allows for more flexibility. You can select rates to maximize your electrical cost savings without installing a separate meter.

- Separately, select the best rate for your home or business (non-EV charging) needs.
- Track your savings specific to EV charging more easily.
- EV submetering is the process of measuring electrical usage specific to your EV through a submeter. It distinguishes your EV charging from your non-EV usage.
- An EV submeter can be:
- EV charging equipment with a submeter inside of it, or
- a standalone unit that can exist external to the EV charging equipment.
- The EV submeter measures the power that flows to your vehicle and stores that data for billing purposes.
- PG&E uses that data to bill you for your EV charging distinctly from the power you use for non-EV purposes.

Learn if you qualify:
- Complete an Electric Capacity Check with PG&E to determine if your site has sufficient capacity for EV charging. Submit a request for the capacity check through a change-of-service application on Your Projects. Or call 1-877-743-7782, Monday – Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Install a PG&E-approved EV submeter for tracking EV electrical usage. For a full list of approved EV charging equipment with embedded submeters or standalone external submeters, see the Approved Product List (hosted by Southern California Edison).
- Retain data collection and transmission services from a PG&E-approved Meter Data Management Agent (MDMA). Currently, no MDMAs have been registered or approved for EV submetering. Once there are approved MDMAs, a list will be published on this page. You can also contact your EV Service Provider or charging equipment manufacturer to learn if they are considering becoming a PG&E-approved MDMA.
- Contact your MDMA to request information on enrollment. They will coordinate your enrollment.
- Meet the conditions, requirements and terms listed in PG&E’s EV Submetering Application and Agreement as provided by the MDMA.
Frequently asked questions
What is the benefit of submetering?
Submetering may be helpful for customers who would like to separate the electrical usage of their EV charging from their home or commercial building. Previously, customers had to install a separate meter to specifically bill and track EV charging, which introduced additional costs. With EV submetering, customers can separate their EV and non-EV electrical usage without installing a separate meter. This allows customers to enroll in an EV rate for their EV charging and a non-EV rate for their home or business.
Can the submeter account owner be different from the primary-meter account owner?
An EV- submeter account owner can be different from the primary meter account owner. Both the primary- meter account owner and the submeter account owner will need to agree to the terms, conditions and agreements set forth by PG&E. With a submeter, an individual tenant can assume the full costs and responsibility associated with their EV charging.
