What is Title 24, Part 6?

Title 24, Part 6 is a state regulation managed by the California Energy Commission to ensure that building construction and installations achieve a minimum level of energy efficiency for both residential and nonresidential buildings. The building energy standards are intended to form a baseline, which no project should go below, but offers plenty of opportunity to go beyond the basics and select a higher performing system.

To help ensure that the latest energy efficient technologies and construction techniques are used, the building energy standards are updated every three years. The most recent version took effect on January 1, 2017.

What does this mean for me?

It's important to understand the new standards so when planning for building upgrades, you know what changes are required and what is optional. For example, not all upgrades trigger the energy standards, but many do. Lighting retrofits that replace the entire fixture often need to follow the standards. But some retrofits that just add controls to assure all unnecessary lighting is turned off when not needed may not trigger additional requirements.
