Wildfire Wood Management Program

We are reaching out to landowners to offer the removal of wood debris from trees that were cut down by our crews for safety in response to 2021 wildfires. Our goal is to complete wood removal work in a safe and timely manner. Some areas may require additional time and resources to account for weather conditions, safety requirements or permitting.

If approved by the landowner, we will be removing wood debris from trees we cut down for safety in response to 2021 wildfires, including:

Wildfire wood removal work across 2020 wildfire footprints is focused on:

• Removing safely accessible 2020 wildfire wood debris from private property with landowner permission.
• Addressing 2020 wildfire wood debris on private property that requires additional planning or environmental permitting to remove. This includes the removal of 2020 wildfire wood debris from city, county, state, federal or tribal lands.

The unprecedented California wildfires in 2020 and 2021 devastated many communities throughout PG&E’s service area. We remain committed to supporting the recovery process. After these wildfires, we worked to quickly and safely to restore power to customers. This included inspecting and cutting down hazardous trees that posed a potential safety risk to work crews or electric equipment. This work was done in coordination with CAL FIRE and other agencies responding to wildfires.

Large wood debris that is greater than four inches in diameter was left on-site because it is property that legally belongs to the landowner. In the subsequent months, we have been listening to landowners and communities and recognize that the trees we cut down for safety can be a burden to those who are already experiencing hardship.

In response to this feedback, we are returning to private, city, county, state, federal and tribal lands where we cut down trees as a safety precaution following the 2020 and 2021 wildfires and removing remaining wood debris, if authorized by the landowner.

We will continue offering wood removal to landowners in new fire footprints where we cut down trees in response to wildfires and will explore opportunities to refine our wood management program.

Landowners with wood debris from trees that were cut down by PG&E in response to the 2020 or 2021 wildfires may opt into the program by completing, signing and returning the appropriate permission form to wildfirewoodmanagement@pge.com. Please know that while weather, ground conditions and safety precautions may impact our schedule to remove wood debris, we are committed to completing this work as soon as possible. Landowners will be notified directly by the contract crew assigned to the area in the coming months when work is able to proceed.

We are committed to minimizing waste. PG&E and its vendors legally dispose of wood material in the most efficient and cost-effective manner through disposal methods that are environmentally sound.

The Wildfire Wood Management Program offers the removal of wood from trees felled by PG&E for safety following the 2020 and 2021 wildfires at no cost, with landowner approval.
