Our virtual tour shows the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, its multipurpose facilities and the beautiful surroundings.
General Tours for individuals are offered on most Fridays on a first-reserved basis. There is a maximum of eight visitors allowed per tour.
General Tours for groups and/or educational groups are offered on select days on a first-reserved basis. For educational groups, up to 60 visitors can be accommodated if the educational group provides transportation. Children must be ten years of age or older. There must be one adult chaperone for every 10 children.
Tours begin at 9:30 a.m. and end around 11:30 a.m. (unless otherwise noted). Tours start at PG&E’s Energy Education Center (EEC). The EEC is located at 6588 Ontario Road, San Luis Obispo. Transportation is provided from the EEC to Diablo Canyon Power Plant and back.
The tour begins at the PG&E Energy Education Center, just outside Avila Beach. It starts with a safety message regarding the tour. Visitors then board a van that takes them into Avila Beach, through Diablo Canyon’s front gate located near Port San Luis, and on the 8-mile drive along the Pecho coastline to the power plant.
Once inside the boundaries of the power plant, the van will stop at a scenic point near the fire department and guests will have an opportunity to view and photograph the plant and surrounding areas. They will next visit the facility’s marina, which offers unique views of marine life, wildlife, and plant components. Afterwards, visitors can see the training simulator --a replica of the power plant’s Unit 1 Control Room -- where personnel operating the plant spend 20 percent of their time in training.
Next, guests are driven up the hill to see the Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI). Our guides will explain how used fuel is safely and securely stored at Diablo Canyon. There’s a great location along the drive to get a bird’s eye view of Diablo Canyon’s containment domes.
Please note: Diablo Canyon is an active industrial site and operations at the facility may require a modification to the schedule based on what areas are available to tour.
All visitors are required to have a valid state or federal issued ID to participate (an expired ID is not valid). Acceptable forms of identification include: valid government-issued photo ID, U.S. driver’s license, a passport, DMV issued ID or military ID.
*Special exceptions may be made for minors. Please email, EnergyEducationCenter@pge.com.
During the tour, there’s a considerable amount of standing and walking. Participants must be able to ascend multiple flights of stairs, withstand warm temperatures and walk approximately 1.5 miles unaided.
Packages and containers entering and leaving the facility are subject to a search. Please leave all personal items not pertinent to the tour at home or in your car.
