Project details

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is committed to providing safe, reliable, affordable and clean energy to our customers. In 2017, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which is responsible for managing California’s energy grid, reassessed several projects across California. This reassessment included South County Power Connect. The project was previously approved in the California Independent System Operator’s (CAISO) 2013-2014 Transmission Plan.


In March 2018, the CAISO Board decided to revise the scope of South County Power Connect, which will no longer include the construction of a new substation. The CAISO Board also decided to cancel a separate project in the Watsonville area.


The revised scope will help address the area’s reliability needs by upgrading existing equipment. The project, which is in the early planning stages, is now known as the Morgan Hill/Watsonville Area Reinforcement Project. The project will include upgrades to facilities at Morgan Hill Substation on Main Street and upgrading a 15-mile section of the Green Valley–Metcalf 115 kV line between Morgan Hill Substation and Green Valley Substation on Minto Road in Watsonville.
