NextEra Energy Transmission West and PG&E Seek Public Feedback on Proposed Paso Robles-Area Electric Infrastructure Project

PG&E Corporate Relations (408) 282-7140

Paso Robles, Calif. - NextEra Energy Transmission West, LLC and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) are holding public open houses to encourage feedback on a new infrastructure project that will help ensure the continued safety and reliability of the electric system serving Paso Robles, Atascadero, San Miguel, Templeton, Creston and Santa Margarita.

The proposed project will include building a new substation and a new transmission line, as well as upgrading existing transmission lines in the area. These critical investments will strengthen the region's electric grid to meet the growing energy demands of nearly 47,000 local electric customers and ensure a highly reliable and stable electricity source for residences and businesses.

The California Independent System Operator (CAISO), the state agency responsible for operating and managing California's power grid, has determined new energy infrastructure is needed to ensure long-term electric reliability in the Paso Robles community and surrounding areas. NextEra Energy Transmission West and PG&E were selected by the CAISO to build this infrastructure.

NextEra Energy Transmission West and PG&E are each responsible for planning their respective upgrades, but are working collaboratively to engage stakeholders and the community throughout the planning and permitting process. The new Estrella Substation, to be sited and constructed by NextEra Energy Transmission West, will connect to the existing Morro Bay-Gates 230 kV transmission line and the San Miguel-Paso Robles 70 kV transmission line. PG&E is responsible for a set of electric grid upgrades known as Paso Robles Area Power Connect, which, in conjunction with the proposed substation, will connect a new transmission source to the local electric grid. PG&E's upgrades will include the construction of a new 70 kV transmission line from the new substation to the San Miguel-Paso Robles 70 kV transmission line and upgrading a portion of the existing San Miguel-Paso Robles transmission line.

"These upgrades are vital in our efforts to provide reliable and efficient energy service to our customers. We encourage area residents and business owners to come out to one of our upcoming open houses and talk with our team to learn more about how this project will allow us to respond to changing energy demands and continue providing our customers with safe and reliable service," said Pat Mullen, region director of PG&E's Los Padres Division.

Recent growth in the Paso Robles area, spurred by the evolving local economy, has accelerated the need for investments in the electric grid. The proposed project will strengthen the power grid, helping facilitate the integration of new renewable energy sources and maximizing the ability to move energy efficiently. By providing the flexibility needed to adapt to energy demands and helping protect against outages, the project will ensure safe, reliable power continues to be delivered to customers across the region.

"NextEra Energy Transmission West is committed to delivering a new substation that will help the electric grid in the Paso Robles area meet the region's growing energy needs. We will work closely with the community to communicate our plans and the benefits this new substation will provide to area residences and businesses," said Mike Sheehan, executive director, Development, NextEra Energy Transmission.

NextEra Energy Transmission West and PG&E invite the community to attend one of five public open houses to learn more about the proposed project and its benefits and provide feedback regarding potential transmission line routes and substation locations.

Following these initial steps, the project will be submitted to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), where additional environmental review and public comment will be undertaken. The CPUC has sole jurisdiction on the project's approval, including siting and routing. If approved, the project would be operational in 2019.
