Learn about the PG&E cash rebate program

The CSI-Thermal Rebate Program offers cash rebates for solar water heating systems that are installed on single-family homes. Each rebate is a one-time payment that is based on how much energy the system is expected to displace. Residents who heat their water with natural gas can get a maximum rebate up to $4,336.

Get more information on how the program works

The rebate program runs until December 31, 2017. The rebate amount decreases over the life span of the program, in a four-tiered declining structure. The earlier you apply, the greater rebate amount you may be eligible to receive.

Use the incentive calculator to discover the potential size of your rebate. Visit California Solar Initiative Thermal Program – Solar Calculator.

View an important update about incentives for electric or propane solar water heating

The CSI-Thermal Program is still accepting new applications for electric and propane solar water heating projects. However, we are out of funding for incentives, so new applications are being placed on a waitlist.

PLEASE NOTE: This waitlist is only applicable to residential customers of single-family homes who heat their water with electric or propane.

PG&E has made a request to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to continue funding the program. We will notify you after a decision is made.

You can download the waitlist with the new CSI photovoltaic (PV) applications for either non-residential or residential customers:

Residential Waitlist (PDF, 503 KB)

NOTE: Being on the list does not guarantee an incentive.

Incentives for natural gas solar water heating systems are still available, and have plenty of funding. Learn more about available natural gas incentives. View CSI Solar Thermal Program Incentive Step Tracker.

Determine whether you are eligible for a rebate

To qualify for a CSI-Thermal Program rebate, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are a homeowner who installs a solar water heating system within the service territory of PG&E, Southern California Edison Company (SCE), Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) or San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E).
  • You use a qualifying system that displaces either natural gas, electricity or propane as the fuel for heating water.
  • You use an eligible CSI-Thermal Solar Water Heating Contractor to select and install a qualifying system.

Qualify for an additional financial incentive

A federal tax credit may be available on the installed cost of a solar water heating system.
