FAQs about SmartAC™
Know your SmartAC features and benefits
If you are enrolled already in SmartAC, learn the details about the program in the following FAQ.
I’m enrolled in SmartRate™. What happens if I join SmartAC?
You continue to receive notifications about SmartDays™.
Seven to 10 days after your SmartAC device is installed, your SmartAC and SmartRate accounts are linked, letting your air conditioner (AC) cycle automatically.
I’m enrolled in SmartRate and SmartAC. How do they work together?
When your SmartRate and SmartAC accounts are linked, your AC automatically cycles on SmartDays. Your AC runs at a slightly lower capacity on SmartDays and helps you meet your SmartRate savings goals.
PLEASE NOTE: On SmartDays, you can save even more if you raise the temperature on your thermostat a few degrees.
What’s the difference between a SmartAC Event Day and a SmartRate SmartDay Event?
The following information explains the differences between the event days.
Get information about SmartAC Event Days
The events occur from May 1 through October 31, usually on the hotter days of the season.
On the day of an event, PG&E posts an activation message by 11 a.m. on your online account. Visit Your Account.
You can also find out whether an event is scheduled by calling 1-866-908-4916.
PG&E automatically sends a signal to your SmartAC device. This signal tells your AC to cycle for as little two hours, but not for more than six hours.
Your rate doesn’t charge like it does on SmartRate SmartDay Events.
Get information about SmartRate SmartDay Events
The events occur from May 1 through October 31, up to 15 times per season.
PG&E notifies you one business day ahead so you can decide how to shift or reduce your energy use.
Rates are higher from 2-7 p.m. PG&E automatically sends a signal to your SmartAC device so you use less power during those hours.
If you opt out of AC cycling, you’re charged at the higher rate.
To save even more, you can raise your thermostat a few degrees.
SmartAC Event Days and SmartRate SmartDay Events can happen at the same time.

Must I re-enroll in SmartAC every year?

NOTE: The PG&E incentive is available only once.
