FAQs about SmartAC™
Know your SmartAC features and benefits
If you are enrolled already in SmartAC, learn the details about the program in the following FAQ.
I’m enrolled in SmartRate, what happens if I join SmartAC?
You continue to receive notifications about SmartDays™.
Seven to 10 days after your SmartAC device is installed, your SmartAC and SmartRate accounts are linked, letting your air conditioner (AC) cycle automatically.
I’m enrolled in SmartRate and SmartAC. How do they work jointly?
When your SmartRate and SmartAC accounts are linked, your AC automatically cycles on SmartDays. Your AC runs at a slightly lower capacity on SmartDays and helps you meet your SmartRate savings goals.
PLEASE NOTE: On SmartDays, you can save even more if you raise the temperature on your thermostat a few degrees.
What’s the difference between a SmartAC Event Day and a SmartRate SmartDay Event?
SmartAC events can happen independently of SmartDay events. SmartAC events are typically shorter than SmartDay events, usually 1 to 3 hours, and there aren’t as many as SmartRate. But on SmartDays, the SmartAC device will be signaled to help you save. Both programs can also have events on the weekend.
SmartRate events can happen any day of the year, though they most likely occur on summer weekdays. The SmartAC device is intended to be a tool to help you be more successful on SmartRate. If you turn your air conditioner off on SmartAC days then you are likely saving enough and installing a SmartAC device won’t help you save more. You can opt out of the AC cycling event, but your SmartDay charges and credits will still apply per the outline of the SmartRate plan.
When can SmartAC events be called?
SmartAC events can be called any day of the week including weekends. They can be called any hour of the day for no more than six hours.
How far ahead am I notified about a SmartAC Event Day?
The SmartAC program does not email, text or phone you if there is an event. Energy supply issues are unpredictable and the SmartAC program may be called upon to help prevent power interruptions with very short notice. SmartAC events are posted on PG&E’s website and on and the SmartAC web pages by 11 a.m. the day of an event.
