  • On the plan, your typical electric rate is reduced from June 1 to September 30, except on SmartDays.
  • SmartDays™ are days when electric rates are higher from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • SmartDays can be called any day of the year including weekends and holidays (although events on these days are much less likely to occur). A maximum of 15 SmartDays are called each year.
  • We notify you by 2 p.m. on the day before a SmartDay, so you can plan to shift or reduce your electricity usage the following day.
  • SmartRate is voluntary. You can opt out at any time.
  • SmartRate is risk-free and backed by our Bill Protection guarantee. Bill Protection helps ensure that you don't pay more your first full summer on the plan.

Regular-Day Reduced Rate.You receive a price reduction of $0.024 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) on your energy usage from June 1 – September 30, except from 2 - 7 p.m. on SmartDays. You also receive an extra price reduction from June 1 – September 30 of $0.0075/kWh for energy usage above 100 percent of baseline for all eligible rates except E-TOU-B. The E-TOU-B price reduction is $.0050/kWh, from June 1 – September 30.

SmartDay Rate. You pay a $0.60/kWh SmartDay Rate in addition to your current rate, for a maximum of 15 SmartDays per year. On those 15 SmartDays, you’re charged the SmartDay Rate and your current rate for five hours, from 2 – 7 p.m. SmartDay charges may be higher than non-SmartDay Rates in each tier. Your participation in SmartRate means that you accept higher electric rates than stated by law, in each tier, for up to 15 days a year.

Bill Protection. You receive Bill Protection for the first full summer (May through October) on this plan. If the total SmartRate costs are more than a regular residential pricing plan, PG&E credits the difference on your November energy bill. If SmartRate is not for you, call PG&E to opt out at any time.
