The InterAct Tutorial and Help
InterAct provides useful, time-series data such as 15-minute, hourly and daily energy usage and local hourly weather conditions. The data is collected each night through radio or telephone connections. Various visualization and analysis tools for statistical or comparative analysis and trending accompany the data. Reports can be scheduled to run automatically and can be delivered to you by email in your choice of format. The data can help you as you consider participating in one the many Demand Response programs sponsored by PG&E. For example, you can analyze your energy usage in various temperatures.

Learn about InterAct qualifications
InterAct is designed for large commercial and industrial customers who:
- Have interval data meters with a maximum demand of 200 kW or greater for three consecutive months within the last 12 billing months, or
- Are participating in one of our Demand Response programs.

Understand what equipment is required
You can participate in InterAct with only the following items:
- An interval meter
- Web access (through Internet Explorer 5.x)
- Microsoft Windows® 98, NT, 2000, XP or later.
Learn about interval metering technology
Interval metering is about getting detailed electric usage information. It means capturing energy usage data often (every 15 minutes for the InterAct program) and putting it on the Internet for you to access (after logging in with your password). The data is sent from meters to the InterAct website once a day, between midnight and 8 a.m.
InterAct involves four basic pieces of technology:
- An interval meter
- Data communication by radio or telephone
- Data collection to gather the information from your meter each day and store it in a database so that you can access it on our website
- Energy management tools to assess your electric use
Understanding InterAct meters
The electric meter that we install at your business uses the latest solid-state technology available. The meter can record energy usage as often as once every minute. The meters installed under the program record energy usage every 15 minutes. The meter also has a "pulse output," so you can connect it to an energy management system for your business.
Understanding how InterAct uses data communications by radio or telephone
Each meter communicates your electricity usage information to a central data center. Depending on your location, we use either a two-way data radio or a telephone. Wherever possible, we install a two-way radio that uses a nationwide two-way paging network. If your area doesn’t have radio coverage, we use a regular telephone line or cellphone.
Understanding InterAct data collection and storage
Each day, just after midnight, the data center sends a message to each meter and gets the last 24 hours of electric usage information. We check to ensure that the data has no large errors. Then, we place the data in our secure, password- and privacy-protected database. The database is connected to our InterAct website, which enables you to access your data over the Internet.
Understanding how InterAct energy management tools are used
After the information is stored in the database, you can access it by logging in to your account. We record your usage every 15 minutes, collect it each night through a radio or telephone connection and deliver it to your desktop with our password-protected InterAct system.
