Welcome to Pacific Gas and Electric Company's Web site for its efforts related to biomethane-to-pipeline injection and transportation projects.
PG&E will facilitate the interconnection of biomethane-to-pipeline injection projects, but does not own or operate the projects. At present, we accept biomethane manufactured from anaerobically digested animal or agricultural waste into our gas transmission system, subject to our gas quality tariff (Gas Rule 21
, Section C). For your reference, we also include biogas project information related to onsite generation.
To obtain information about any aspect of PG&E's biomethanation program or if you want to discuss a gas purchase contract with PG&E, please contact Ken Brennan in the Gas Transmission and Distribution department by phone at 415.973.0017 or by e-mail at kjbh@pge.com.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are provided below in two lists by end use of the biogas production:
In an effort to encourage the development of biomethanation projects, an industry contact list has been established to facilitate networking among market participants. The Biomethane Industry Contacts List
identifies service providers such as consultants, project developers, equipment providers, etc. To add your organization's name and contact information to this list, please submit the Contact List Request form
.
The list is provided by PG&E solely as a convenience to parties interested in biomethane technology. Neither PG&E nor any of its employees (i) recommends, endorses or represents any firm listed herein; (ii) makes any warranty or representation, express or implied, with respect to the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of this information; or (iii) assumes any liability with respect to the use of, or for damages resulting from the use, of this information.
In 2008, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify partners for potential projects that would demonstrate cost-effective commercially-ready emerging technologies capable of producing significant quantities of renewable biomethane, as defined in the California Energy Commission's Overall Program Guidebook. The goal of the RFI was to support selected projects with funds from the joint PG&E and San Diego Gas & Electric Company Emerging Renewable Resource Program (ERRP) application to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
In Phase I of the RFI, participants identified biomethanation technologies, and determined market needs for support and possible roles for PG&E. In Phase II of the RFI, participants submitted specific projects for consideration. PG&E reviewed and prioritized the Phase II submittals, and has provided feedback to those who submitted responses.
On January 29, 2009, the CPUC denied the ERRP application in Decision 09-01-036 in most part, and did not approve any funding for biomethane projects. Thus, at this time PG&E is unable to financially support a biomethanation demonstration project. We will continue to facilitate developing projects in any way we can, and are certainly interested in purchasing biomethane gas at competitive prices from commercially-ready technologies.
