|Description||The most effective way to lower energy use and greenhouse gasses is to go beyond a specific-technology focus and take a whole-system approach to buildings. This is the direction in which policies and incentive programs are moving, with the goal being to find the best combination of technologies to lower a building's energy footprint as much as possible.|
The instructor will detail this whole-building perspective, beginning with the science of building performance, which studies how all energy systems in a building work together. We will discuss key energy efficiency measures, how to assess their potential in the home, and what their implementation would do to reduce the size of proposed renewable energy systems. We will then cover cost scenarios and ROI calculations.

Bill Holloway is a Performance Consultant at PG&E's Energy Training Center (ETC) in Stockton. The ETC is the educational segment of the Customer Energy Efficiency Department. In his position at the ETC, Bill is primarily responsible for the many faceted education segment of PG&E's low-income program. He also contributes to the ETC's energy efficiency efforts by delivering classes focused primarily on contractors.
Additionally, Bill contributes research, appliance rebate design information and answers all kinds of "what about" questions. Energy Efficiency has been a big part of Bill's life since the mid-1980s. He has a degree from San Francisco State University.
Pete Shoemaker is the Renewables Program Coordinator at the PG&E Pacific Energy Center in San Francisco. He teaches a variety of courses for the PEC, including those on solar electric (PV) systems, solar water heating systems, and combining energy efficiency and renewables.Pete has much experience in the renewables industry, including two years as head of the PV division of Poco Solar Energy, Inc., of Santa Clara. He is well-versed in sales and system design for both residential and commercial customers. Pete has worked as a PV consultant for green building projects in the City of Pacifica, assisting in design, permitting, and environmental impact reports.Pete's educational background includes workshop and classroom teaching and curriculum design, including ten years as a lead educational software designer for The Learning Company. He has a B.A. from Stanford University.
Trey Muffet is the Senior Building Scientist at Recurve, formerly Sustainable Spaces. He has worked in the construction industry for 10 years. During that time, Trey has earned degrees in Business with focus on environmental planning and a Masters of Science in Sustainable Systems (MS3). Since entering into the field of home performance he has earned accreditations as a nationally certified HERS rater, BPI Analyst and Shell Specialist. Trey has performed advanced diagnostics in most climate regions in the US, particularly the Southeast, Northeast, Midwest and Northwest, including the microclimate of San Francisco. He is pleased to be working in the industry and with PG&E for the advancement of energy efficiency, home performance and improvement and carbon emission reduction.
