High Efficiency Refrigerator

Refrigerators consume between 12% and 19% of all electricity in a typical Californian home. That means refrigerators typically use more electricity than any other single household appliance. The good news: refrigerators have become much more efficient in the past 20 years, using 60% less electricity on average than 20-year-old-models. Even better news: get a $75 rebate when you purchase a qualifying high efficiency model for your home or business.

Out with the old, in with the efficient

Replacing your 10-year-old refrigerator with a new high-efficiency model can:

Save you up to $30 per year on your electricity bill.
Conserve enough energy to light the average household for a month and half.
Prevent the release of an additional 100 pounds of carbon dioxide emitted from burning fossil fuels to generate electricity per year.

How to Get Your Rebate

You must be a PG&E customer with an active electrical meter at the address where you’re installing the high-efficiency refrigerator.
The refrigerator must be a Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) Tier 3 Model. Review this list to find the latest qualifying models.

Exclusions:

Not all ENERGY STAR^® refrigerators qualify for this rebate. Be sure to consult this list to find the latest qualifying models.
Additionally, CEE Tier 1 and 2 models do not qualify.

PG&E’s 2012 refrigerator rebate program is available for qualifying products that are purchased and installed between April 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012. Rebate payment is not guaranteed as funds are limited and amounts and offerings are subject to change. All rebate program terms and conditions apply.

Refrigerators with top-mounted freezers generally use 10%-25% less energy than refrigerators with either side-mounted or bottom-mounted freezers.

Consider skipping the ice-maker and dispenser, as these features increase energy usage by 14% - 20%. They also raise the purchase price by $75 to $250.
