Former Tracy Manufactured Gas Plant
History: The former Tracy manufactured gas plant (MGP) operated from 1927 to 1930 at 502 East Grant Line Road in Tracy, California. PG&E acquired the plant in 1930 and shut it down later that year when natural gas became available. PG&E has used the property as a service center since 1958. PG&E conducted several phases of investigation of soil and groundwater at the site to determine the extent of remediation necessary to address impacts from historical MGP activities.
Overview: In 2012, PG&E completed environmental remediation work at the site. This project is part of a voluntary program under the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC).
Based on investigation results and with DTSC’s approval, soil was removed from the site and disposed of at an off-site landfill. Excavated areas were backfilled with clean soil and areas were repaved. During excavation activities, impacts to groundwater were found in the south and northwest areas of the property. A process called In-Situ Chemical Oxidation has been used at the site to treat groundwater in a safe and sustainable manner since remediation work was completed. PG&E continues to monitor groundwater at the site to confirm that impacts are naturally declining overtime.

Sustainability: Sustainable practices are important to PG&E. We try to reduce our carbon footprint on environmental remediation projects, to the greatest extent possible. On this project, we reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 50 tons, recycled 835 tons of material, and contributed $544,916 to the local economy, which included the use of local contractors and laborers.
