Energy Alerts

What are Energy Alerts?

Energy Alerts, made possible by SmartMeter™ technology, let you know when you’re moving into higher-priced electric tiers so you can manage your energy use and save.

When you sign up for Energy Alerts, you’ll get your choice of a phone call, text message, or email letting you know you’re about to move into Tier 3. You’ll also receive additional alerts if you continue to move in to Tiers 4 and 5.

Visit the Understand your Electric Charges page for more information on PG&E's tiered rate structure.

How do Energy Alerts help me save?

If you know what tier you’re projected to reach by the end of your billing cycle, or when you’ve moved into a higher-priced tier, you’ll know what you’re paying for electricity and can make choices to influence your bill each month. For example, if you receive an alert that you’ve just moved into Tier 4, where the price of electricity has increased, you may make different choices on how you use energy for the rest of your billing cycle.

How do Energy Alerts work?

If you sign up for Energy Alerts, PG&E will calculate your electric use starting on the eighth day of your billing cycle. Based on the pace of your electric use, an alert will be sent if you are projected to move into higher-priced tiers (Tiers 3, 4 and 5) before the end of the billing period, and will also be sent once you actually have.

How often you receive alerts depends on how much electricity you use during the billing period. You will receive no more than four messages per service agreement in any given billing period.

How do I sign up for Energy Alerts?

If you already have a login with My Energy, and your SmartMeter™ device is being read remotely, you can go directly to the Energy Alerts sign up page. You will be prompted to log in first.

You need to have a SmartMeter™ electric meter installed that is being read remotely by the SmartMeter™ system. Typically your meter will start being read remotely one to two billing cycles after your meter is installed, but may take longer. If you have a newly installed meter, you will receive a welcome booklet from PG&E when your meter is being read remotely by the SmartMeter™ system.

If your SmartMeter™ device has not yet been installed, you can see when SmartMeter™ devices will be installed in your area on the SmartMeter™ Installation Progress page.

You must be an active residential PG&E account holder on a tiered electric rate schedule (including E1, E6, E7 and E8). Your rate schedule can be found on your bill under the Electric Account Detail section.

If you have not signed up for My Energy, you will need to do so on the My Energy sign up page. You will need your account number, which can be found on your bill, as well as your meter number or phone number.
