2008 AMR/AMI initiative of the year in a North American Investor-Owned Utility

The Utility Planning Network (UPN) recognized PG&E’s SmartMeter™ program for automated metering as the 2008 AMR/AMI initiative of the year in a North American investor- owned utility (IOU).

Founded in 1993, UPN began as a peer group which brings together professionals who manage energy decisions in large commercial/industrial corporations. A decade later, UPN launched the Global AMI Utility Peer Group with a mission to enable utilities worldwide to share business best practices related to the development, implementation and operation of Advanced Metering systems through a staffed utilities-only forum and information service.

An integral part of UPN’s Global AMI Utility Peer Group, the Annual Metering Awards Program was launched in 2003 to recognize utilities worldwide for excellence in advanced metering. Winners are determined by a panel of utility peers representing utilities of all kinds from every corner of the globe. This prestigious industry recognition underscores PG&E’s leadership among American IOUs in deploying automated metering technologies.
