  Introduction

Welcome to our second issue of “ The PG&E Wire ”, developed as a means to increase the level of communication between PG&E and our wireless customers. We hope that you find this newsletter a worthwhile addition to the information you receive through your regular contact with us.

   4th Quarter Rush

October is here and the end of 2004 is approaching quickly! As we all know the end of the year is a hectic time with work demands and the upcoming holidays. The fourth quarter is the busiest time for the construction of wireless sites, and Telecom Business Development is ready to take on the demand! Our project management team has been working hard for the past nine months to make sure that your sites will be constructed on-time by year-end. Please make sure to let us know how we can assist you during this busy season to meet your year-end goals.

   Project Manager Profile

We'd like to introduce Ben Hilderbrand, the newest member of our project management team. Ben's over 6 years of project management experience serving the wireless industry spans from design to construction. Ben entered the wireless industry by providing architectural and engineering services to carriers in the San Francisco market in 1998. Ben joined Sprint PCS in 2000 as a Wireless Implementation Engineer, where he focused on managing site construction activities for multiple Bay Area projects. Ben joined hands with the Metro PCS team in 2003 where he acted as the San Francisco Bay Area Construction Manager. After managing close to two hundred projects through construction, Ben decided to shift his efforts toward the vendor side of the industry and joined Pacific Gas & Electric in 2004. On working for Pacific Gas & Electric, Ben says, "PG&E is entering into a new era. We are breaking through the boundaries that are generally surrounding traditional utility business structure. This shift creates learning and advancing opportunities--both personally and professionally. PG&E truly is a great place to work."

   Project Management Process

Our team has developed a project management process in order to make it faster and easier to construct your wireless sites on PG&E infrastructure. A quick overview of that process is described below.

Carriers/consultants submit search rings to PG&E for site identification. Once a site is identified, the carrier submits a site application form (SAF) with processing and installation fee (P&I) to PG&E. PG&E works with the carrier on land rights acquisition and easement modification. PG&E also conducts a structural analysis, provides a ground grid design and assists the carrier with local jurisdictions on permitting and zoning. Once permitting and zoning is approved and a Site License Acknowledgement (SLA) is signed, PG&E works with the carrier to schedule construction of the site.
   Jurisdiction Outreach Program

Road Show is a Success!

In our last issue, we discussed PG&E's efforts to reach out to cities and counties about our telecommunications program. Our booth at the California League of Cities Annual Conference and Expo on September 17-18 in Long Beach was a big success. There were lots of city officials who were not aware of our program. We explained how they could maintain the aesthetics of their communities and improve cellular coverage by siting antennas on existing structures such as transmission towers. We spoke with mayors and city council members across our service territory, from Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo in the south, to Yuba City and Redding in the north, and lots of other cities in between.

The trip was such a success that we are taking our show on the road again to the California State Association of Counties annual meeting on November 16-17 in San Diego. If you are there, stop by and say Hi! In the meantime, Betsy Smith and others are still available to make presentations to any cities or counties you think would benefit by some more information on our program. You can contact Betsy Smith at eps6@pge.com.

   Website Redesign

We are in the process of re-designing our website to serve you better. Our new site at www.pge.com/telecommunications will feature the ability to download forms, guidelines, and our marketing brochure; provide links to our newsletters, annual report and tower locator ( www.pge.com/towerlocator ); and provide a list of department contacts. We hope that the new site will provide an easier and faster way for you to get the information you need.
