Manufactured Gas Plants
Former Watsonville - 1 Manufactured Gas Plant
History: The 618 Main Street property (site) was a portion of the former Watsonville-1 manufactured gas plant (MGP).The former MGP operated from 1871 to 1905, when the Watsonville-2 MGP started its operations at 14 Walker Street. From 1905 to 1931, the site was used for a variety of commercial purposes including an auto dealership and repair shop. In 1931, the Coast Counties Gas and Electric Company (CCGE) opened a customer service center at the site. PG&E acquired CCGE in 1954 and continued to use the site as a customer service center until 1989 when it was leased and became a restaurant. PG&E sold the property to the current restaurant owner in 2001 and today the site contains the restaurant building and a parking lot. Investigations were performed on-site to determine the extent of MGP impacts to soil, soil gas (the air in between soil particles) and groundwater.
Overview: In May 2012, a ten-week long environmental remediation involving the removal of impacted soil beneath the site was completed. This remediation work was part of a voluntary program under the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC).
Community Benefits: Some benefits of the project included the construction of a new concrete parking lot, concrete driveway, garbage enclosure and new landscaping and associated irrigation system.
Sustainability: Sustainable practices are important to PG&E. We try to reduce our carbon footprint on environmental remediation projects to the greatest extent possible. On this project, we were able to recycle approximately 156 tons of asphalt, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 12 metric tons, and contribute approximately $220,000 to the local economy to date.
