Manufactured Gas Plants

Former Merced Manufactured Gas Plant

Former Merced manufactured gas plant in 1899

PG&E, under the direction of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), has a voluntary program to investigate and remediate impacts from historical operations at the site of a former manufactured gas plant that operated at 560 West 15th Street in Merced. The site is now the location of PG&E’s Merced Service Center.

Site investigation was recently completed and results will determine what cleanup actions are necessary. PG&E is developing a work plan for cleanup, which will be available for public review and comment prior to DTSC’s approval. PG&E is working with DTSC to incorporate sustainable methods into this work plan and reduce the environmental footprint of cleanup and operations.

The surrounding community is kept informed of site activities through work notices and project updates or door-to-door outreach as appropriate.

The former Merced manufactured gas plant operated from 1883 to 1930, at which time natural gas became available and the manufactured gas plant was shut down and dismantled. PG&E acquired the property in 1930 and has since used it for service center operations.
