Manufactured Gas Plants
Former Hollister Manufactured Gas Plant
PG&E has a voluntary program to investigate and remediate impacts from historical operations at the site of a former manufactured gas plant in Hollister at 7th and Sally Streets. The site is now the location of PG&E’s Hollister Service Center. This work is being conducted under the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC).
Site investigation was completed in 2010 to evaluate the extent of remediation that may be necessary. PG&E prepared a human health risk assessment in 2011 that DTSC approved. Additional sampling was conducted in February 2012 to help inform preparation of a remedial action plan. The draft remedial action plan is available for public review and comment from November 12 to December 21, 2012. A public meeting will be held to discuss the draft RAP and receive input on Wednesday, November 25, 2012, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Veterans’ Memorial Building, Room 218 649 San Benito Street in downtown Hollister. DTSC will consider and respond to all public comments received prior to approving the cleanup plan.
The former Hollister manufactured gas plant operated from 1886 to 1943, at which time it was dismantled. The service center was built in 1954.
