Manufactured Gas Plants

Former Beach Street Manufactured Gas Plant – San Francisco

The former Beach Street manufactured gas plant (MGP) operated near the intersection of Beach and Powell Streets in the Fisherman’s Wharf area of San Francisco. PG&E acquired and operated this historic gas plant from 1905 to 1930, when it was closed down and dismantled. PG&E later sold the property and it was redeveloped for commercial use. A hotel currently occupies portions of the historic site.

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is currently determining if any sampling or remediation activities are necessary. If they are, we'll work closely with that agency, the property owner and City health and environmental departments to design the most effective program for the site.

PG&E is conducting similar work at the sites of two other former MGP locations in the Marina District of San Francisco, near the area north of Bay Street and Buchanan Street and near the area west of Fillmore Street and Bay Street.
