No-Cost Energy-Saving Tips
Without spending a penny, there's plenty you can do to save this winter:
- Lower thermostat settings this winter to 68 degrees F or lower
- Close curtains, shades, and blinds at night and during unoccupied periods of the day
- Close doors and windows while your HVAC system is running
- Regularly check air ducts and pipe insulation for damage
- Turn off gas equipment and heating appliances when not in use
Low-Cost Improvement Tips
Money spent wisely will pay big dividends:
- Perform routine HVAC maintenance
- Clean or replace dirty filters
- Clean intake screens, supply registers, and return grills
- Keep your furnace lubricated and properly adjusted
- Caulk windows, doors, and pipes for any air leaks
- Use weather stripping around windows, doors and pipes
- Seal ducts with mastic sealants, not cloth duct tape
- Plug gaps around pipes, fans and vents that go through walls, ceilings and floors
- Install an ENERGY STAR® programmable thermostat with locking covers to prevent unnecessary heating or cooling. Consult manufacturer's manual for proper operating instructions
Cash In on Energy-Saving Investments and Rebates
Take advantage of PG&E rebates, programs and services and invest in energy-efficient gas equipment. Products include:
- Commercial boilers, water heaters, furnaces, washers, and commercial pool heaters
- Commercial ovens, fryers, griddles and steamers
- Insulation for pipes and tanks

- Install insulation on exterior walls, ceilings and wall cavities
- Install an energy management system (EMS) to control HVAC and lighting

- Check online for efficiency information on specific makes and models
- Always ask for energy use information
- Ask about equipment
