Demand Response Events: Energy-Saving Tips

It’s easy for office buildings in California to save both energy and money. PG&E offers money-back incentives to businesses that use less energy during peak demand times. Make it a creative challenge: Ask your employees to come up with ideas that make it fun for your entire company to save energy together.

Try these energy-saving tips for your facilities:

Air Conditioning

  • Precool work areas, then cycle any air-volume heating, ventilation air conditioning units.
  • Temporarily reset the static pressure in variable air-volume air-conditioning units.
  • Turn off ceiling fans and room fans, and raise temperature settings.
  • Use ventilation control: By temporarily reducing your building’s external airflow, you can reduce the demand on your cooling systems.

Machines and Equipment

  • Turn down, adjust or turn off the following:
    • Beverage vending machines and chillers
    • Boilers, pumps, fans and equipment that are not in use (especially in printing facilities)
    • Decorative features such as fountains, lighting, and ambient audio and video displays
    • Excess elevator banks and escalators (as permitted)
    • Fans, pumps and chillers
    • Nonessential indoor and outdoor lighting, signage, window displays and office equipment (such as printers, copiers, shredders and coffeemakers).
  • Charge batteries and battery-operated equipment before an event. Then, unplug battery chargers and use only precharged equipment during an event.
  • Schedule icemaker use before or after an event.
  • Reset chilled water temperatures.

Tasks and Processes

  • Use less office equipment: Schedule in-person meetings during events.
  • Adjust employee schedules and shifts, and finish dishwashing and housekeeping activities, before or after an event.
