Tips for Grocery Stores
Energy Efficiency for Grocery Stores
These energy saving tips can help you lower your bill:
- Install or replace strip curtains and install automated door closers on walk-in refrigerators.
- Install evaporator fan controllers, and efficient evaporator fan motors in cases and walk-ins. Replace worn door gaskets, clean condenser coils and top off the refrigerant charge.
- Replace shaded pole fan motors with electrically commutated motors (ECM) to reduce fan motor electrical consumption in refrigerated cases.
- Buy energy-efficient combination ovens and replace inefficient fryers, holding cabinets and steamers with new efficient models.
- Replace existing T-12 fluorescent lamps and magnetic ballasts with T-8 or T-5 lamps with elec¬tronic ballasts. Install energy-efficient lighting in display cases. Install electronic dimmable ballasts and daylighting controls to dim the lights when sufficient daylight is available. And put timer switches or occupancy sensors in your walk-in boxes to reduce unnecessary electricity use.
- Install programmable thermostats, upgrade to variable speed drives on HVAC fan motors, and perform routine equipment maintenance on HVAC equipment, such as replacing filters at least every three months, insulating refrigerant lines, and cleaning and shading condenser coils.
Shedding Load During Demand Response Events
- Delay the use of electric-resistance defrost controls and the use of anti-sweat heaters.
- Shift use of electrically operated equipment before or after an event.
- Turn down, cycle, or turn off back-store refrigerated storage and refrigerant compressors, which may safely float for hours with little temperature change.
