Install Low Pressure Drop Air Delivery System

Financial incentives are available to support the installation of energy efficiency measures to attain low pressure drop in your lab air delivery system, including reducing the Air Changes per Hour [ACH] within Safety Codes and Guidelines.

Use Variable Air Volume [VAV] Fume Hoods

Under PG&E's Nonresidential Customized Energy Efficiency programs, fume hoods with a variable air volume [VAV] exhaust system and /or auto-sash closure are eligible for financial incentives.

Tips for Shedding Load During Demand Response Events

PG&E’s biotech customers have had success with the following practices for demand response Event Days:

  • Turn off non-essential indoor/outdoor lighting, signage, window displays and office equipment not in use (i.e., printers, copiers, shredders, coffee makers).
  • Turn off decorative features, such as fountains, lighting and ambient audio and video displays.
  • Pre-cool work areas, then cycle constant air volume heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units or temporarily reset static pressure in variable air. volume HVAC, turn off ceiling fans and room fans, and raise temperature settings.
  • Implement load-cycling, temperature resetting, and pre-cooling in facilities with package AC units.
  • Turn off beverage vending machines and shift use of icemakers before or after an event.
  • Schedule meetings during events to minimize use of equipment.
  • Charge batteries and battery-operated equipment prior to an event, then unplugging battery chargers and use only pre-charged equipment during the event.
  • Adjust employee schedules so that times of increased production or energy use occur before or after planned events.
  • Turn off non-essential process and pumping equipment.
  • Shut down or cycle air compressors, air handlers and ventilation systems.
  • Turn off or turn down chillers, and reset chilled water temperature or variable speed drive controls.
  • Curtail process loads that can be served by generators or alternative fuels.
  • Produce extra product a day ahead, and do only packaging on the Event Day.
  • In laboratories, reschedule tests to occur before or after an event.
