Demand Response Events: Energy-Saving Tips

Agriculture and food processing can be very energy-intensive. Get strategic about your energy use and save: PG&E offers money-back incentives to businesses that use less energy during peak demand times.

If you’re an agriculture business, focus on making your cooling and refrigeration processes energy-efficient. Food processing businesses can save on lighting, cooling and nonessential equipment.

Try these energy-saving tips for your facilities:

Lighting

  • Turn down or turn off all greenhouse lights.
  • Turn off barn and yard lights.

Machines and Equipment

  • When possible, schedule electrical equipment use before or after an event.
  • Precool, then float or cycle refrigeration equipment.
  • Reduce aerator use during events.
  • Reset chilled water temperatures.
  • Turn down, cycle or turn off the following:
    • Air-circulation equipment (such as cooling fans, ceiling fans, air compressors, and blowers)
    • Chillers
    • Conveyor belts
    • Pumps
    • Vertical lifts
    • All nonessential process and transportation equipment

Tasks and Processes

  • Schedule irrigation tasks before or after an event.
  • Perform only essential processes during an event, and delay the rest until afterward or the next day.
  • Stockpile your inventory before an event, stop production during the event and schedule packaging processes after the event.

  • California Solar Initiative
