DescriptionWe'll start off with a site tour of a DOE gateway project with an LED retrofit, guided by the lighting designer. Attendees will learn how to select and specify LED lamps and fixtures, and about the potential issues with LED applications. This class will provide hands-on access to a number of LED system components, controls, and fixtures samples.

Instructor(s)John Curran, Ph.D.
Dr. John Curran is an applied physicist with experience in the solid state lighting, consulting, electronics, fire, security, and oil industries. He has managed the R&D efforts of a number of high technology businesses and is currently President of LED Transformations, LLC, a service company providing guidance to industry and government on solid state lighting. John received his Ph.D. in Physics from Drexel University in 1979, specializing in wave propagation in multi-phase media. He has worked in the areas of soil mechanics, seismic acoustics, magnetostriction, and optics while working for firms such as Exxon, Allied Signal, and more recently as Vice President of Engineering and CTO for Dialight Corporation. Recent presentations on solid state lighting have included Lightfair (2006), SPIE (2004 & 2006), and CLEO/PhAST (2006). He has received 11 patents and is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, Acoustic Society of America, SPIE International Society for Optical Engineering, the Optics Society of America, and the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association.

Michael Souter
Michael K. Souter, FASID, IALD, LC, CID is the founder and Managing Principal of Luminae Souter Associates. Michael holds degrees in both Interior Design and Electrical Engineering. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers, a Professional Member of The International Association of Lighting Designers, a Certified Lighting Designer and a Certified Interior Designer. Michael has over 30 years experience in the design industry and 25 years experience specializing in lighting. His work has been published in many magazines and periodicals including Architectural Digest, Designers West, Contract Design, LD+A, Hospitality, Architectural Record and many others. Awards include two GE Edison Awards of Excellence, the IIDA Paul Waterbury Award of Excellence for Exterior Lighting, several Cooper Halo Awards of Excellence in Lighting and several IIDA awards of Merit.
