Unusual Event Concluded at Diablo Canyon Power Plant after Tsunami Warning

AVILA BEACH, Calif. – Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) concluded an Unusual Event at 3:23 p.m. on March 11, 2011, at its Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP). This action was taken following the lifting of a tsunami warning that was triggered this morning by the earthquake in Japan. The plant continued to operate at 100 percent power during the Unusual Event.

DCPP personnel, who undergo extensive emergency preparedness training, will continue to monitor the situation in close collaboration with San Luis Obispo County emergency officials.

During the event, PG&E assisted in local relief efforts by opening its Energy Education Center in San Luis Obispo to area families and visitors who wished to relocate to a higher elevation.

The Unusual Event was declared at approximately 1:23 a.m., Friday, March 11, 2011. As defined by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an Unusual Event is any other-than-normal plant-related condition that does not require any emergency action by the general public or any government authorities and is the lowest of four levels of emergency classification.
