How to Read Your Meter
Gas and electric meters record the total amount of gas or electricity used, just as a car's odometer records mileage. To help us keep track of how much energy you use, please keep your meters accessible and clear of obstructions.
Customers sometimes think meters or Pacific Gas and Electric Company meter readers incorrectly record the amount of energy used. This is rarely the case. Meters are highly accurate instruments, and our meter readings are correct more than 99 percent of the time. You can check by learning to read your own meters. Here's how:
- Read all the dials, except the testing dials on a gas meter. (Testing dials have no numbers.)
- When the hand on any dial is between two numbers, read the smaller number.
- When a hand is directly on a number, read that number if the hand to the right is on or just past zero; if it's not quite there, take the smaller number.
