Activity: How Dense Can You Be?

Materials

  • 1 16 oz. plastic soda bottle with cap
  • 1 measuring cup
  • tap water

Gas, water, and oil are usually located together underground. If a geologist drills a bore hole (a well) into a trap, in what order will the three substances be found? This activity will show you by using air, water, and cooking oil to represent the natural gas, water, and oil that is found in the ground. You can do this experiment online, or try it for real in your own kitchen. Click the bottle to try this experiment online.
