How the System Works

Natural gas is used by customers as a key energy source in California and across the United States. In most major cities natural gas is the clean fuel of choice for heating and cooking. In order to provide natural gas to customers, more than 1.5 million miles of transmission pipelines and distribution systems exist in the United States.

Gas Pipeline Safety

PG&E has a comprehensive survey and monitoring program to ensure the safety of its natural gas transmission pipeline system. PG&E has also taken significant initial actions to improve the safety and operations of PG&E’s natural gas system – and the safety of the communities we serve - following the San Bruno tragedy in September 2010.
