Is SmartRate Smart for You?

Step 1

   Check Out the Plan

  • With the SmartRate Plan, you can pay up to 20 percent less on your summer electric bills.
  • On the SmartRate plan, your normal electric rate is reduced June 1-September 30 except on SmartDays.
  • SmartDays are days when electric rates are higher from 2-7 p.m.
  • SmartDays can be called any day of the year including weekends and holidays. There are no more than 15 called each year.
  • You will be notified by 2 p.m. one day before a SmartDay so you can plan to shift or reduce your electricity usage the following day.
  • SmartRate is a voluntary plan. You can opt out any time.
  • You can try SmartRate risk-free. It is backed by Bill Protection to ensure you don't pay more your first full summer on the plan.
  • Go to the bottom of this page to find additional information about the SmartRate plan.

Step 2

   Set Up How You're Notified

Choose text, email or a phone call. You decide how you and up to three others will be contacted when a SmartDay is called.

Step 3

   Shift Your Energy Usage

A little planning goes a long way toward saving money on your electric bill. You'll find new ways to reduce your electricity usage on SmartDays and other days of the year, too.

Regular Day Reduced Rate. Participants will receive a rate reduction of $0.024 per kilowatt hour (kWh) on their energy usage from June 1-September 30, except from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on a SmartDay. Participants will receive an extra rate reduction of $0.01/kWh for energy usage being billed at tiers 3 and 4 during all hours from June 1-September 30.

SmartDay Rate. Participants will be billed a $0.60/kWh SmartDay Rate, additional to their current rate, for just five hours (from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.) on no more than 15 SmartDays each year. SmartDay charges for your usage in the tiers may be higher than the otherwise applicable rates in each tier. By voluntarily continuing on the SmartRate Plan, you are accepting higher electric rates than stated by law in each tier up to 15 days during the participation period. Accounts without Bill Protection may therefore have a higher annual bill than may otherwise occur, but bill savings are also possible.

Bill Protection. Participants will receive Bill Protection for the first full summer (May through October) on this plan. If the total SmartRate Plan costs are more than they would have been on a participant's regular residential pricing plan, we will credit the difference on the participant's November energy bill. If you find the SmartRate Plan is not for you, call PG&E to cancel any time.
