Extension of Daylight Saving Time

Spring forward, fall back

This common saying has important implications for PG&E customers who take advantage of our Time-of-Use rates. As a result of the 2005 Federal Energy Policy Act, Daylight Saving Time has been extended to start on the second Sunday in March and end the first Sunday in November. This is a pilot project that began in 2007 to determine if the change will help reduce energy consumption by realigning daylight hours. The pilot project is pending final legislative approval.

Why is this important to you?

PG&E's Time-of-Use meters are not currently programmed to recognize the newly extended Daylight Saving Time dates—meaning that between March 9-April 5 and October 26-November 2, your Time-of-Use meter and the actual time will not match.

During the extended weeks of Daylight Saving Time, your Time-of-Use periods will begin and end one hour later than the current time displays. For example, if you are on an E-6 rate schedule and you normally take specific action to avoid energy consumption during the peak or partial peak periods, or if you use time clocks or any other type of energy management system to manage your electric energy use, you will need to operate and preprogram your system according to the following revised Time-of-Use periods on the charts{*} below. You may want to post the following times as a reminder to employees or members of your household.
